An Inside Look at the Career of Dick DeVos

Dick DeVos is known as having success in a variety of verticals. He has seen success as the President of global corporation Amway, has had a successful political career and has even served as Chief Executive Officer of the NBA team the Orlando Magic.


He is known as being a man who can accomplish anything he sets his mind to. He is perhaps best known for his skills in business development. He joined Amway early on in his career and worked in many wings of the company including sales, marketing and research. His greatest work was during his time as President. He held the position of President from 1993 to 2002. During that time Mr. DeVos oversaw every aspect of the company throughout six continents and more than 50 countries. As a testament to his business development skills, when he joined the company overseas sales contributed to a mere 5% of the company’s overall sales. At the end of his time with Amway he has expanded the company to 50 total countries and nearly 50% of sales came from overseas footholds.


Dick DeVos also founded The Windquest Group with his wife, Betsy DeVos. The Windquest Group is a private investment company that seeks to fund companies that are true disruptors in their industries. The company focuses on the manufacturing, clean energy and technology verticals.


He is also incredibly passionate about serving his community. He helped to lead the revitalization of downtown Grand Rapids. The project brought about the construction of a $212 million convention center, a $75 million arena, a $130 million heart hospital and a $30 million Downtown Market. The revitalization of downtown Grand Rapids is one of the most notable projects he has taken part in. This project was a testament to how much a town can accomplish when those with leadership experience take the helm.


Like his wife, Dick DeVos is also passionate about education. He served on the State Board of Education in Michigan. Dick DeVos also published a book entitled, “Rediscovering American Values.” The book made the New York Times best-sellers list and has been printed in seven languages.


Betsy DeVos was recently highlighted in a feature in Philanthropy Roundtable. She discussed her current views on education reform as well as her views on philanthropy. She highlighted a few current focuses of The Dick and Betsy DeVos Family Foundation. She highlighted successes she has seen, including successfully instituting school voucher programs in several states.
